One Eastern Washington University student was pronounced dead following a motor vehicle accident at Sutton Park, Tuesday morning, at 1:45 a.m.
According to reports, the deceased student was Adam O. Morales, 21, from Grandview, Wash. Cheney Police Department’s Sgt. Rick Beghtol confirmed Morales was the name of the deceased.
In an email, EWU officials wrote that Morales was a sophomore majoring in computer information systems.
Two other unidentified male passengers, who are not EWU students, were taken to a local hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. They were later released.
Cheney Police Cmdr. Rick Campbell said the vehicle drove up to the intersection of K and West Sixth streets, left the roadway, entered the park and struck a pine tree before it rolled over.
Deputy Craig Chamberlain, spokesman for the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, said the passengers were coming from a bar and that speed and impairment were factors in the accident. Chamberlain added that the cause of death would be identified after the medical examiner’s office completes an autopsy.
EWU is offering counseling services for students, who can call (509) 359-2366 or visit the Counseling and Psychological Services office in Martin Hall, Room 225.
