Cunningham, Morton, Marchand advance to state golf

Three members of the Cheney High School girls' golf team will advance to the state tournament, May 28-29, at The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway, Wash.

Steffi Cunningham, Shyann Morton and Cheyenne Marchand earned spots at state after competing in the district tournament, May 19.

Marchand placed second overall, hitting an 86 - three behind Clarkston's Gracie Frazier, who has led the Great Northern League all season.

Girls' golf head coach Gerald Morton said Marchand has come a long way due in part and Fairways golf pro Ron Sebold.

"I believe with her work ethic, she will be competing next year for the No. 1 spot in the GNL," Morton said.

Cunningham finished fifth after hitting a 91 and Morton placed ninth with a 105. Jaceya Prophet also competed in districts, shootting a 129.

Prior to districts, Cheney placed third as a team in the league tournament, May 13, with 537. Cunningham came in third with an 89. Morton and Marchand made it in the top 10, hitting 100 and 102, respectively. Prophet shot a season best of 115.

To determine state qualifiers, the GNL put together the scores from the league and district tournaments, with the top 10 players and one alternate advancing to state. While Cunningham (180), Marchand (188) and Morton (205) advance to state, Prophet (244) missed the mark.

Morton said he couldn't be more proud of his team's accomplishments.

"There is no stress from here on out, they made it to state," Morton said. "Whatever happens they should be very proud of themselves for making it this far."
