Daniel Thomas Maggs passed away Sunday, March 30, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 80. Dan was born in Roslyn, and at an early age moved to Renton where he attended high school.
After graduation, he joined the Navy during the Korean War before attending Eastern Washington College of Education. Eastern was also where he met his wife Adele. They married in 1956 and were to spend the next 50 years happily in Cheney.
Dan's early career was spent working for the Internal Revenue Service, where he advanced to lead the Spokane office.
He also attended Gonzaga University in the evenings, and earned his Juris Doctorate in 1972. Faced with a choice of relocating, Dan left the IRS, and after teaching briefly at Gonzaga, was appointed as a District Court Judge. He served in the Spokane County District Court until 1999.
Upon retirement he enjoyed staying busy in the legal profession. He was a Life Member of Masonic Lodge 42, and Martha Chapter OES 60. He was also ctive in numerous community organizations.
During their years in Cheney, he and Adele were active members at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Dan was always ready to help a friend; he became a mentor and a valued confidant for many people. He is remembered for his kindness, thoughtfulness, thoroughness, and trusted counsel.
Dan was devoted to his family, who will miss him greatly.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Adele, and is survived by his brother Bill; son Dean and daughter-in-law Vanna; daughter Debra and son-in-law Jeff Bruce. He also is survived by four grandchildren, David Maggs, Kristen Maggs, Spencer Bruce, and Megan Bruce.
A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, or a charity of your choice.
