The Medical Lake Middle School Junior National Honor Society (NJHS) held a “Cookies for Cancer” fundraiser to raise money for childhood cancer research.
According to the NJHS’s constitution, schools are required to participate in a service project each year.
Judy Dunbar, co-adviser to the Medical Lake Middle School NJHS, said the students wanted to raise money for the American Childhood Cancer Organization of the Inland Northwest for this year’s project.
The idea of holding a cookie fundraiser came from president Hannah Petek, vice president Emilie Browning, treasurer Claire Morrison and secretary Justyce Cogswell.
Students sold the cookies made by Cheney Trading Company and bracelets provided by the charity for $1 apiece.
NJHS members were not the only ones who put time and energy into the fundraiser.
Dunbar said that parent organizers Tony Turner and Kathy Overfelt did much of the “leg work” retrieving the items for the students.
The parents also took pre-orders from teachers, helped pre-package the cookies with students.
“The moms have been here for every lunch period this week, which has helped this be an amazingly well organized and supported project,”Dunbar said.
Denise Caldwell from the organization said the fundraiser was an “unexpected gift from out of the blue.”
“The kids are fabulous for wanting to help,” Caldwell said.
Dunbar said that the rest of the school has been supportive of the project. She hopes it becomes an annual event.
“I am very proud of how the NJHS students have stepped up and presented this fundraiser and of how the student body has supported them,” Dunbar said.
