Seven Blackhawks advance to regionals

The Cheney Blackhawks wrestling team began their postseason competition by traveling to East Valley to compete in districts, Feb. 7-8.

In team scores, Cheney came in sixth with 146 points.

Seven Blackhawk wrestlers earned the chance to compete at regionals, Feb. 14-15 at West Valley High School in Spokane.

Josh Wessels (170 pounds) came in second place in his weight division after he lost to Deer Park's Jason Aebischer by decision, 7-2.

Devon Waterman (182) and Michael Ferguson (195) both came in third. Vern Sanderson (138) and Garrett Pederson (295) took fourth.

Cheney had wrestlers who placed in the consolation bracket, too. Ben Rowe (170) and Kodi Smith (195) finished in fifth place.

Andrew Jenkins (113), Jacob Mills (220) finished sixth. They will be alternates for regionals.

Cheney's Hannah Brown (137G) took fifth place in the girl's sub-regional tournament.

Blackhawks' head coach Brad Rasmussen mentioned that the athletes performed well in the competition, with Rowe and Smith showing a lot of heart and character as they went into their matches. He added the goal is to help the athletes advance to the state championships.

"[We'll try and] get as many kids through as possible," Rasmussen said. "It's going to be a fun, yet tough meet."
