Medical Lake hosts NEA District wrestling tournament

Medical Lake will take the momentum of three straight Northeast A League victories into their hosting of Saturday's district tournament.

Wins last Thursday in Newport over the host Grizzlies 54-27 and 63-18 against Kettle Falls in a triple-dual evened the Cardinals' league record at 3-3.

In the Kettle Falls victory, Ricky Petersen at 145 pounds completed an undefeated regular season at 6-0 with a pin in his weight class. Nick Reed, a 113-pounder also won by a pin and finished 5-1 in NEA competition.

"It was nice to end the season on a good note," Medical Lake head coach Sam Petersen said.

Winning versus Kettle Falls were Seth Rojas (126), Tristian Keith (132), Gabe Wolfe (152) and Hudson Petek (160) all also scored victories via pins against the Bulldogs while 138-pounder Mathew Peterson won a 6-4 decision . Shane Conners (120), Jackson Tappero (189), Christian Keole (195) and Ian O'Brien were all victorious by forfeit.

Reed, Conners, Rojas, Keith, Petersen, Petek, Tappero and Erik Penn (152) all scored forfeit wins versus Newport. O'Brien won by pin.

"Newport forfeited quite a bit and we had several pins against Kettle Falls so the matches went quick," Petersen said. That was welcome, he said because of snow, "The roads were bad but we got home OK."

"We have several wrestlers who are 3-4-5 seeds and it will depend on where other teams place their wrestlers what seed they wind up," Petersen said as he looked ahead to regionals.

Saturday's tournament begins at 10 a.m. and will send the top two finishers in each weight class onto regionals Feb. 15, at Freeman.
