The Cheney High girls' basketball team essentially assured itself of at least a spot in the approaching Great Northern League post season with a win last Tuesday over visiting Deer Park, 58-46.
The Lady Hawks got a game-high 21 points from Kendyl Cone, with Katie McGourin adding 15 and Shyann Morton 12. No other stats or information was available.
The Lady Hawks finished last week with a home loss to GNL-leader Clarkston Friday, 72-45. Cheney fell behind big early on, but rallied late in the first half to pull within 11 points of the Bantams before a buzzer beater 2 put the visitors up 34-21 at the break.
In the third quarter Cheney had several chances to pull within 10 and potentially even single digits, but two of Clarkston's game-high total of seven 3-pointers late in the period helped the Bantams (8-7, 6-1) to a 54-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter en route to the win.
The split gives Cheney a 4-10 record overall, 2-5 in league play and a two-game lead over Deer Park for the sixth and final playoff slot. Cheney has two games this week, neither easy.
The Lady Hawks traveled to Pullman Tuesday night to face the fifth-seeded Greyhounds (6-9, 2-5) and return home Friday to take on West Valley (11-4, 5-2).
