Lady Hawks cruise to win over Deer Park in Great Northern League opener

The Cheney girls’ basketball team opened the 2014 Great Northern League season with a much-needed win at Deer Park. The Lady Hawks, led by the scoring of Shyann Morton and Kayla Lemelin, blew open a 7-5 game after one quarter by outscoring the Stags (1-8, 0-1) 27-10 over the next 16 minutes en route to the win.

Morton led Cheney with 14 points, with Lemelin adding 10 and Kendyl Cone nine.

Cheney went 1-1 over the holiday break at the West Valley Tournament, Dec. 27-28. The Lady Hawks opened with a win over Bonners Ferry, Idaho, statistics not available at press time, and finished with a 56-33 loss to Timberlake High of Spirit Lake, Idaho.

Morton again led the Lady Hawks against the Hawks with 12 points, while Cone and Katie McGourin each added seven.

Cheney (3-5, 1-0) resumes league play this weekend, traveling to East Valley Friday to take on the Knights (7-2, 0-1) and then facing Pullman (2-5, 0-1) in the regular-season home opener Saturday.
