Lady Hawks find scoring difficult in losses

If the Cheney girl’s basketball team is going to break into the win column again this season they are going to have to find ways to score more points. The Lady Hawks managed double digit scoring in just one of the eight quarters they played last week, losing 52-25 at Freeman Friday and 47-25 Saturday at home against Lakeside.

Cheney stayed close to the Scotties in the first half Friday night, trailing 23-15 at the break before Freeman pulled away in the second half. Katie Vold led all scorers with 18 points while teammate Sierra McGarity hauled in eight rebounds and the pair combined for seven steals.

Katie McGourin led Cheney with nine points, the only player to come close to double figures.

Saturday the Lady Hawks couldn’t keep pace with the Eagles, scoring just two points in the first and second quarters and trailing 30-4 at intermission. Cheney managed to cut into Lakesides margin a bit in the fourth, outscoring the Eagles 10-7.

Megan McDowell had 10 points for Cheney with Kendyl Cone adding eight.

Cheney travels to Millwood Dec. 27-28 for the West Valley Invitational, taking on Idaho schools Bonners Ferry Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Timberlake Saturday at 2:15 p.m. The Lady Hawks open Great Northern League play Jan. 3 at Deer Park, 0-7, who have been outscored 337-145 in their first seven games this season, including a 58-5 loss to Lakeside.
