The city of Cheney expected revenues to decrease about $80,000 from its previous budget and officials were in the process of adjusting spending accordingly.

Spokane County was attempting to collect nearly $31,000 in fees from the city of Medical Lake for dispatch services for the community’s police force. Mayor Jim Hill said the city would not pay the county because of their mutual aid agreement.

After failing in their previous attempt to secure zoning to accommodate duplexes, developers of the third addition of the 11-lot Parkside development in the north part of Cheney got the go ahead from the Cheney Planning Commission.

Zach Hansen rushed for 114 yards on just 10 carries while the remainder of the Cardinal ground game rolled up a total of 275 yards as Medical Lake beat Riverside 41-7. The Cards improved to 7-0 on the season.

Nearly 80 Cheney residents who showed up at the Reid Lab School to hear a presentation from police officer Carey Murphy on the potential gang problem in the community were notified that there were no gangs here just yet.

The Cheney area was expected to get hit with a serious strain of the Beijing/Texas/Panama influenza. The Spokane County Health District was offering shots at $14 each.

The Cheney School Board voiced their concern over the potential passage of Initiatives 601 and 602. The first would limit state expenditures by inflation rates and population growth and would have required a referendum for taxes exceeding the limit. I-602 would have limited state revenue collections and expenditures on personal income. The district estimated it would lose nearly $2 million if these passed in the Nov. 2 general election.

With quarterback Jeff Corlett connecting on 10-of-12 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns, the Cheney Blackhawks improved to 2-0 in Frontier League play with a 50-12 win over Colville.

Oct. 19, 1983

Cheney High School students Kathryn Smith, Katy Donley, Aaron Mason and Tim Stanley were all in Olympia participating in mock legislative activities as part of Boys and Girls State sponsored by the American Legion Post 72 in Cheney.

Key Tronic Corp., which had a manufacturing facility in Cheney along SR-904, announced that sales for the first quarter of 1983 were at $28 million, up from $16.9 million or 66 percent from the previous year at the same time.

Charges stemming from an assault and robbery at Streeter Hall on the EWU campus were filed against an unidentified 16-year-old juvenile male. The theft included $19 in cash.

Cheney’s 23-0 football victory over East Valley proved to be historic in that the win was the first for the Blackhawks over the Knights since 1966. Roger Kugler and Mike Bunting each scored touchdowns.

Five Cheney High School students, Cheryl Lovell, Marie Maughan, Kay Owen, Marilyn Purvis and Bonnie Geschke were all vying for the title of Miss Cheney, the local Junior Chamber of Commerce announced.

A one-car rollover on the Cheney-Plaza Road killed 51-year-old Cheney resident Charles McNall, who lost control of his pickup truck and overturned it.

Judge Jack Crabb fined two Eastern Washington State College students, Larry Brown and Frederick Miller, for their dangerous driving. Brown was cited for driving 60 mph in a 40 mph zone and was fined $15 plus $4 court costs and a $2 drivers education fee. Miller forfeited a total of $11.

Just when injuries began to heal, an outbreak of the flu hit the EWSC Savages football team as they began to prepare to face the College of Idaho Coyotes head coach Dave Holmes announced.
