Washington Traffic Safety Commission officials released results last week from the recent “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” DUI enforcement campaign conducted from Aug. 16 through Sept. 2 in Spokane, Whitman, Ferry and Pend Oreille counties of Eastern Washington.
Preliminary numbers show that 119 local motorists were stopped and arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI). Statewide, law enforcement officers arrested 1,420 drivers for DUI.
Last year in Spokane, Whitman, Ferry and Pend Oreille Counties during the same time period, officers on routine and extra patrols arrested 133 people for DUI.
Law enforcement agencies in Spokane, Whitman, Ferry and Pend Oreille counties taking part in the emphasis patrols were the cities of Cheney, Airway Heights, Colfax, Pullman and Republic along with the Eastern Washington University and Washington State University Police Departments, the Whitman, Ferry and Pend Oreille county sheriff’s offices and the Washington State Patrol. The patrols were supported by the Spokane County Target Zero Traffic Safety Task Force, and funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
These patrols are important because August is one of the deadliest months on Washington’s roadways, including all causes of traffic fatalities.
