The Eastern Washington University track and field and cross country teams added some depth to their programs by inking 11 high school athletes and two transfers for the 2013-14 school year, including two Cheney High School athletes, Janessa Day and Erin Clark.
After placing third in the 400 at the last two WIAA 2A state championships, Day moved up to place second at the 2013 state meet, running a personal best of 56.98 seconds. She also placed sixth in the 200 at the state finals, running 25.93. Day has been an All-Greater Northern League selection in each season for the 400, 200, 4x200 and 4x400 relays. She has also been named female sprinter of the year in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Her other personal bests came in the 200 (25.65), 100 (13.24) and 800 (2:19.80). Her father, Jay Day, played football for the Eagles in 1992 and 1995.
Clark placed fifth in the pole vault at the WIAA 2A state championships for the second-straight season, clearing the bar at 11-6. She hit her personal-best jump of 12-0 in a first-place effort at a Greater Northern League meet against West Valley and Colville, the fifth-best mark in the state of Washington this year. Replicating her personal best would put Clark on the top 10 lists at Eastern.
Twelve of the signees hail from the Pacific Northwest, while one comes overseas from Spain.
Highlighting the signing class is Courtney Bray from Mead High School (pole vault) and East Wenatchee’s Trenton Osborn (long jump), who had the top marks in the state of Washington this season in their events.
