Cheney Fire Department personnel responded to a vehicle fire last Saturday morning in the Cheney Safeway parking lot.
Firefighters received the call about 9 a.m., arrving as the vehicle, a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta, was fully engulfed. Department spokesman Tim Steiner said it didn’t take long to extinguish the blaze, and that the vehicle owners were at a nearby bus stop waiting to get into another car with a friend when the fire broke out.
Steiner said everything forward of the Jetta’s firewall in the engine compartment was destroyed. Steiner said the vehicle was a total loss, and based upon the latest Kelly Blue Book, estimated the damage at $5,000. No cause has been determined. Another vehicle nearby suffered some minor heat damage.
