Cheney’s soccer team continued its successful run through the Great Northern League with a 7-0 win last Tuesday over visiting Colville. The win is the Blackhawks’ sixth straight, taking their league mark to 8-0, 24 points and 9-2 overall.
Senior forward Nick Ellis got Cheney on the board in the third minute off an assist from Micah Weller, with the junior midfielder feeding Trevan Estrellado for a score in the ninth minute. Weller got his third assist six minutes later on Ian Schmandel’s goal, with scores by senior Daniel Bogart, assisted by Schmandel, and Estrellado, assist to Nick Steele, helping give Cheney a 5-0 margin at the break.
Weller got into the scoring column off an assist from Estrellado in the 42nd minute, and Bogart’s second goal, assisted by Oliver Smith, in the 70th minute providing the final margin. Cheney out shot fourth-place Colville (5-3, 14 points, 7-5) 20-7 with senior goalkeeper Joe Scott making three saves and sophomore Kam Galm making two.
The game was the Blackhawks final regular-season home match and was Senior Night for eight seniors: Scott, Bogart, Ellis, Kevin Reyes, Carson Lamphere, Jake Neperud, Maka Kauwe and Andrew Horton.
If Cheney is to repeat as GNL regular season champions they’ll have to do it on the road. The Blackhawks hold a two-game lead in the loss column over East Valley (7-2, 21 points 8-2), and faced the Knights in a key league showdown Tuesday, results next week. Cheney travels to fifth-place West Valley (4-5, 12 points, 6-6) Thursday and wraps up the regular season next Tuesday in Pullman against the third-place Greyhounds, 5-4, 15 points, 6-6.
