Cheney girls' golf is right in the middle

After one Great Northern League meet, the Cheney girls’ golf team is in the middle of the pack in the league standings.

Cheney scored 568 points in the inaugural lead match Monday, March 25 at the Clarkston Country Club, which put them in fourth place overall. Deer Park and Pullman ran away with the top two spots while East Valley squeezed by Cheney, with a score of 563.

Head coach Gerald Morton said his team of 12 girls is playing well and have been pretty solid in their other invites this year.

Among the top performers on the team for the Clarkston match were Shyann Morton and Steff Cunningham. Freshman Shyann Morton shot a 92 on the course, which was good enough for the No. 1 GNL score. Cunningham was a close second for the Cheney team, with 101.

Overall, Shyann Morton’s score of 92 was followed by East Valley’s Erin Wallman at 95. Deer Park’s Allison Rummer and Pullman’s Becky Birchett both shot a 96.

“We’ve got two or three golfers who will be pretty good down the road,” Morton said.

Other Cheney golfers at the GNL meet included: Breanna Dufour 119, Jayceya Prophet 125, Cheyenne Marchard 131 and Ashlyai Marn 173.

Now entering the middle of the season, the weather for matches hasn’t proven to be a factor just yet, according to Morton. For the events earlier on, the consistent weather proved to be a blessing.

The Cheney team travels to Deer Park on Wednesday, and the invite could go either way, Morton said. It all depends on which players are able to make the match. During their practices, Cheney golfers have been working on fine-tuning their game.

“They (Deer Park) doesn’t have a lot of depth, but they have five or six of them that are really strong,” Morton said. “Deer Park is the team to beat.”
