Meyer leads Shock to opening game victory

Former Eastern Washington University quarterback Erik Meyer threw for eight touchdown passes and ran for another in leading the Spokane Shock to a 67-41 season-opening Arena Football League win over the Cleveland Gladiators March 24 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

Meyer found Adron Tennell for the first of his six touchdowns with 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter on a 3-yard pass. With 6:29 left in the first Tennell made it a 13-0 game with his 1-yard run.

Jordan Kamar became Meyer’s target for his next two touchdowns in the second quarter helping Spokane build its lead to 33-20 with less than a minute to go in the half on touchdown passes of 27 and 4 yards.

Tennell completed scoring in the half taking a 3-yard pass from Meyer into the end zone with just 11 seconds to play in the half, giving Spokane a 40-20 lead at intermission.

Meyer connected with Tennell for his last score, upping Spokane’s lead to 46-27 with 7:56 left in the third quarter and 3:13 later Meyer scored untouched on a bootleg from 3 yards out pushing the lead to 53-27.

He concluded his afternoon’s work with fourth quarter scoring tosses to Paul Schiechl and J. Solomon. Meyer finished the day completing 32 of 42 passes for 284 yards and no interceptions.
