Spring quarter classes at Eastern Washington State College began recently and the return of students and faculty was noticeable in the community. Students are between classes in the landscaped part of the Cheney campus.

Cheney police responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on South Cross Road and found 60 year-old Michael Mitchell dead of a single gunshot wound to the chest. The investigation continued with a 56-year-old man being detained for questioning.
The future of the Cheney Gun Club was up in the air over the lease of land the group uses for their range. Property owner Roger Helm said the club “has been a poor tenant,” but had leased the club the land through December 2003.
Medical Lake was set to make major changes in its urban growth area as part of a comprehensive plan update.
With 30 combined hits between the two, Medical Lake outlasted Connell in a non-league baseball game with the Cards; Jeff Day launching a pair of home runs.

The continuation hearing over the issue of reinstatement of Cheney police officer Ken Sides was postponed due to the illness of Civil Service Chairman Hugh Mills and would be rescheduled in June.
Christina Duggan, daughter of John and Sandra Duggan, was named Cheney 1983 Junior Miss in a ceremony held before a packed house at the Fisher Auditorium.
Before the Cheney School District can attempt another bond issue, “they must cleanup their act,” school board member Roberta McNeal told an audience prior to their regular meeting. Superintendent Gale Mars provided final official results showing the measure failed by 246 votes.
Cheney won a pair of track meets over North Central and Deer Park as Julie Morgenstern set a new school record for the javelin with a throw of 117 feet, 4 inches.

Cheney’s census was to be taken over a two day period by 33 enumerators as the federal government was in the process of updating 1970 figures that saw the city with a population of 6,600 people.
The Tillicum Women’s Club gathered at City Hall in Cheney in observance of the local service organization’s 70th birthday. Among the projects the group helped fund was playground equipment at the Antonian School and a kitchen at Sutton Park.
Grace Edgett, wife of Ted Edgett, one of the owners of a local hardward store, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in a Spokane hospital at age 50.
Twenty-six different activities were being offered as part of Spring Recreation Bonanza, a new local event sponsored by the Cheney Park and Recreation Department.

Cheney police will have a new duty after April 1 when the city’s new dog ordinance goes into effect. They will be in charge of strictly enforcing laws that prohibit dogs running loose or being unlicensed.
Thirty-five years will be enough for Cheney postmaster Melvin S. Jones who will retire March 31. Jones, who began his post office career as a carrier in 1928, was appointed to the Cheney post in 1947.
EWSC president Dr. Don Paterson was to be part of a state Department-sponsored study of international education that would see him travel via Paris to Poland to study teacher education in that country.
Speeders on the Marshall road turned out recently to be a lucrative business for Justice of the Peace Jack Crabb who issued tickets ranging between $10-$15, plus court costs, to seven drivers who exceeded the 35 mile-per-hour maximum.
