The Cheney boys soccer team began their quest for a return trip to the 2A state tournament with a 2-1 shootout victory over 4A Ferris of the Greater Spokane League last Friday at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane.

The Blackhawks took a 1-0 lead on Trevan Estrellado’s goal in the 33rd minute, only to have Ferris tie it in the 57th minute. Neither team scored the rest of regulation or in overtime, forcing the shootout won by Cheney 4-2 on goals by Carson Lamphere, Ian Schmandel, Estrellado and Micah Weller.

The Saxons out shot Cheney 7-6, with Blackhawks senior goalkeeper Joe Scott making four saves.

Cheney has a busy schedule this week, wasting no time in defending its Great Northern League title. The Blackhawks opened league play against Deer Park Tuesday, and travel to Colville to take on the Indians Thursday, returning home for a non-league match on the pitch against GSL 4A Mead Friday at Albi Stadium.

Cheney went 20-1 last season, winning the GNL title and advancing to the state 2A title game for the fourth time in five years, losing 3-1 to a senior-laden Fife team.
