Sonora Hetrick, a 10th grade student from Cheney High School, spent last week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Hetrick was one of 16 students who served as Senate pages for the first week of the 2013 legislative session.
The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Pages, like Hetrick, are responsible for such tasks as transporting bills between legislators as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber in addition to attending page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process.
“This is a really unique experience. I have learned a lot,” Hetrick said in a news release. “It was not what I really expected, but I have enjoyed learning about the real process of making legislation.” Hetrick was sponsored by 9th District Sen. Mark Schoesler, R-Ritzville.
“I am pleased Sonora was able to take part in the Senate Page Program,” Schoesler said. “There is nothing better than being able to see our youth take part in the Legislature.”
Hetrick enjoys running track, singing in choir and pushes herself to achieve as much as she can by taking honors classes. She is the daughter of Janis and Steve Hetrick of Cheney.
