Medical Lake wrestlers hit home stretch

Medical Lake took a 4-4 dual meet record, and a strong Bronze Bracket finish at last weekend’s River City Duals into the final two weeks of the Northeast A League wrestling season

With a make-up Jan. 16 where the Cards faced Kettle Falls in a match postponed after a snowstorm Dec. 20. Thursday the Cards travel to Suncrest to face Lakeside and then wrap up NEA competition at Chewelah, Jan. 23. Medical Lake hosts the district meet Saturday, Feb. 2.

Last Thursday the Cardinals rolled over an undermanned Newport team as Ricky Petersen at 132-pounds and Taylor Dormaier (145) each won by pins in the 62-9 win.

Anton King won in a technical fall at 138 pounds and William Kearney took a tense 4-3 decision at 285 pounds. All other wins came via forfeit versus the Grizzlies.

Medical Lake did well finishing 3-2 at Post Falls. “We won our duals 48-36 over Gonzaga Prep, 48-33 over Bishop Kelly of Boise and 42-24 over Kamiakin of Kennewick,” Petersen said. The Cardinals lost a close 39-33 decision to West Valley of Spokane and a 76-3 thumping by Columbia High from Boise.

“Anton King went undefeated and beat a wrestler from Kamiakin who was seventh in the 3A last year,” Petersen said.

Other wrestlers who had a good weekend were Zeb Klemke, Petersen, Hudson Petek, Tristin Keith and Boaz Guidry, all who finished 3-2. “Several wrestlers won two matches and I think we got better as a team,” Petersen said of the Post Falls outing.
