Holland takes crown, meet record at state in 3,200 meters

Not only is Sanne Holland the 2012 2A 3200-meter run champion, but now she holds the meet record.

Holland’s 10-minute 48.40-second time is the new state meet record, unbroken since 2007 by Hockinson’s Shannon Porter, who ran it in 10:50. Her performance, along with a fifth-place finish in the 1600, led the Blackhawks to a sixth place finish with 44 points at the 2A state track and field championships May 24-26 at Mt. Tahoma High School.

Janessa Day and Kendall Dunn each concluded stellar seasons by collecting hardware at the state meet. Day took third place in the 400 with a time of 58.21, while Dunn took third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.15. Both girls ran both the 4x200 and 4x400 relays through trials and finals. The 4x200 team of Dunn, Day, Katie McGourin and Chae Brown placed third in finals with a time of 1:44.59, and the 4x400 team, consisting of the same group except for Kelsey Schwendiman in place of Brown, took sixth with a time of 4:04.13.

Solid state performances continued from Erin Clark, fifth in the pole vault with 10 feet nine inches, as well as from Schwendiman and Kali Klotz-Brooks, who both made it through to finals in the 800. The girls finished the state 800 much like they have other races this season: neck and neck. Schwendiman took sixth in 2:20.06 and Klotz-Brooks took seventh in 2:20.79.

Head coach Tom Stralser said he was happy with the way things panned out at state.

“This year had some very strong teams and in past years we would have trophied with the amount of points we scored,” he said in an email. “Only one girl that competed did not end up off the turf and on the awards stand. We had an injury that raised its ugly head as well as a couple of kids that started getting sick.”

All but one of the state qualifiers from the girls’ team are seniors this year. While the Blackhawks say goodbye to Klotz-Brooks as she graduates, the team has a lot of experience returning for the 2013 season.
