Trunk-or-treat event comes to Airway Heights

An additional alternative to the trick-or-treat rounds is coming to Airway Heights this Halloween.

Airway Heights’ Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with the Sunset Elementary parent-teacher organization for the first annual “trunk-or-treat” event.

Parks, recreation and community services director J.C. Kennedy said cars participating in the event should begin showing up around 5:15 p.m. The goal of the event is to provide another alternative to trick-or-treating while simultaneously engaging local businesses. Thus far, a good number have already signed up to participate.

“Halloween is one of those things that isn’t quite what it used to be,” Kennedy said.

Other alternatives exist in the city, particularly with churches holding their own events. Kennedy said the location of Sunset’s event would allow kids to potentially visit several different sites throughout the night.

The trunk-or-vtreat event will last from 6 to 8 p.m. Awards will be given out for the best community entry and best corporate entry, based on the decorations on each vehicle.

“I hope the community embraces it, and that it’s something we can turn into an annual event,” he said.
