A career business acumen doesn't transfer into effective government

The gist of the opinion piece (editorial titled “Government really needs to get down to business,” July 26) is that politicians in Washington, D.C. would be better with some business experience. However, that is not really what we need from politicians, especially at the national level. To be effective in government at any level, one needs to know how the political process works, both formally and informally. What is not needed in Washington, D.C. is business executives whose careers have been focused on making a profit. Most of the business acumen acquired through a career does not transfer to politics. It is analogous to how effectively politics transfers to business - it generally doesn't. Lee Iacocca, former CEO of Chrysler, concluded that “you can be a success in business and not have the temperament to be president.” Citizens should not be misled by the naive appeal that we need a businessman as president. In our history, only a relative handful of our presidents have had experience in business. What we need is someone with political experience and expertise to work the system effectively.

McKeehan provided great leadership in Cheney, with Ice Age Floods Institute

It was with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Mike McKeehan. The Cheney-Spokane Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute appreciated him representing the City of Cheney on our Board of Directors for the last five years. The achievements of our Chapter are due in part to his leadership, hard work and commitment to Cheney as the gateway to the Channeled Scablands. We appreciated the generous donation of his time and efforts and his ongoing support of our work to educate individuals about the Ice Age Floods story.
