Janet Ann Hancock

Janet Ann (Seslar) Hancock, age 70, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 18, 2012 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

Jan was born on Pearl Harbor Day Dec. 7, 1941, in Bridgeport, Neb. She spent most of her childhood in Cheyenne, Wyo. and moved to Cheney in 1969. Jan was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and aunt. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, television game shows, sewing, quilting, anthropology, baking, bowling, swimming and solving puzzles. She enjoyed every holiday.

Jan graduated from EWU in 1990 with a general studies degree. She was employed at EWU as an administrative assistant until she retired in 2005. She enjoyed the friendships and sisterhood that Beta Sigma Phi brought her. She was also involved in Eastern Star and AAUW and was a member of Cheney's United Church of Christ. Her sense of humor was one of her finest characteristics and she loved making people laugh with her funny jokes, dramatic acts and funny faces. She enjoyed waking her kids up every Dec. 7 with Franklin Roosevelt's declaration of war as it played on a local radio station.

Jan was very generous and cared so much for those in need. She started a clothing bank in her basement in the late 70's and always donated to those in need at Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Jan is survived by her children, Craig (Darla) Hancock, Doug (Debi) Hancock, Leigh Hancock, Jana (Don) Russell and Joe (Lisa) Hancock; her brothers Virgil and Larry Seslar, her eight grandchildren, her nieces and nephews, her numerous friends, her beloved dog Riley and cat Max. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Paul.

A Celebration of Life took place on June 23 at Cheney's United Church of Christ. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Spokane and her caretaker, Leigh Simmons, of Spokane Valley. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her honor to Hospice of Spokane or SCRAPS of Spokane County.
