Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge announces the first annual “Floods, Flowers, and Feathers Festival.” This event is open to the public and offers free entrance to the refuge and free events to families and individuals of all ages on Saturday, May 19, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The refuge is located 4.2 miles south of Cheney, off Cheney-Plaza Road.
Enjoy spring by experiencing and learning about the exceptional wildlife, habitats and geology of the unique Channeled Scablands landscape.
Take a walk on the wild side, watch biologists band songbirds, go on a bird scavenger hunt, come face-to-face with a skink and other reptiles and amphibians, learn how to track an elk with radio telemetry, and make animal tracks. Festival goers can also see Turnbull Refuge and its colorful array of wildflowers, go on a hike with native plant and bird experts, watch the Ice Age Floods re-enacted and discover how the Turnbull landscape was shaped by lava and Ice Age Floods.
Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge is partnering with numerous organizations/agencies to make this festival a wonderful outdoor event in a remarkable environment. Some of the partners include Eastern Washington University Biology Department, Friends of Turnbull Refuge, Ice Age Floods Institute-Cheney Spokane Chapter, Northeast Washington Chapter of the Native Plant Society, and Spokane Audubon Society.
