Marissa Bertram from Hallett Elementary and Emma Ransom from Medical Lake Middle School are the winners of this year's Founder's Day T-shirt design contest.
Bertram's winning design will be printed on the youth sizes, while Ransom's will appear on all of the adult sizes. Also, both students will be featured in the Founder's Day parade June 16.
Founder's Day president Bob Kibling said six designs were submitted from each school. School administrators and community members gave their input regarding the best design, but ultimately the final choice was made from residents outside of Medical Lake.
“Nobody within the boundaries of Founder's Day was involved in the decision of picking it,” Kibling said. “It was all done by a private person. But we had some terrific designs.”
Ransom, an eighth grader, has designed shirts for band in the past, and also takes a liking to art.
“I like drawing with words and I like fitting them into certain spots,” she said.
She remembers going to Founder's Day when she was younger and particularly enjoyed the floats that were part of the parade.
Bertram's design was inspired by the wooden signs posted at the city limits, welcoming visitors into town.
“I knew everybody knew about the Medical Lake sign, so I knew it would be a good thing to do, to start with,” she said.
Bertram said she'll likely enter the contest again next year, after having the practice of creating this one.
“I tried a couple of nights doing it. It was hard to try and see what I should do and what the setup should be,” she said.
Ransom won four tickets to Triple Play for her design, and Bertram received certificates for food and a stash of tokens at Chuck E. Cheese's.
Kibling, who is entering his last year as the event's organizer, said this year's festivities are looking very bright. He said it's a struggle to pull off Founder's Day each year, and that it only works with some additional help from various community members.
“I really do have some great volunteers for this year,” he said.
For the parade, he said the Shriners will be present and in full force, with around seven different units participating in the parade.
Also, Slick's Auto Club has requested another block of Lake Street to be closed off. Around 100 cars are expected for this year's event, including some motorcycles.
“They've told me it's going to be bigger than we've ever had,” Kibling said.
