Lack of tutors, information for program at Cheney High School

For the past month and a half now, I have been volunteering at the local Cheney High School for the current after school program Avid. During the time I spent there I noticed the lack of communication this program has with the community of Cheney.

This program runs on the outside volunteers in the local Cheney area, in particular the college students of Eastern Washington University. This brings me to my concern is that these students don't have enough tutors walking in on a daily basis due to the lack of communications with Cheney High School.

Not everyone knows what time Avid begins and I feel that the high school should put more of an effort to get this program out there to the community. If no one knows about this program or what time to head in to help out then there is a chance Avid cannot have volunteers for the day.

This after school program is run twice a week for two periods of the day. It focuses on helping students with extra work they have. The whole period is based for this time to reflect on homework.

Many students benefit from this program and this brings me back to my point that Cheney High School needs to start advertising this program so that the community of Cheney knows the lack of volunteers they have. I feel that this does affect the local community of Cheney because some of these students can be maybe a child or a friend or a member of this area.

Avid currently runs on a volunteer basis because the outside volunteers help out the students by giving them an insight on how there is help besides the teachers in their school. I feel that this program is indeed a positive program because it shows the students that outsiders do care enough to help the students out and want to see them succeed.

So maybe a possibility can be for the school of Cheney High to better advertise their need of volunteers through maybe messages on their bulletin board, newspaper articles or posters of messages saying they'd like to see more college students come in to help the students relate or inspire the students. By this being done it will benefit this program more so than ever.

Thanks for helping to make 90th birthday a memorable one

There are never enough words or thoughts to thank all my friends and relatives for coming to my 90th birthday celebration. And for the many, many beautiful cards and gifts that I will treasure for a long time. I also thank the owners of the Cozy Concept and Jean for their festive accommodations at the Cozy Concept.

As you may know, I was born on a farm southeast of Cheney during a snowstorm and attended all the schools there, including the old Normal Training School and through high school. Can you say I am a “pioneer” now?
