An adult male was struck and killed by oncoming traffic while crossing Hayford Road in Airway Heights the morning of Feb. 15.

Around 5:55 a.m., officers from the Airway Heights Police Department and the Spokane County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the collision, which occurred at 9th Avenue and Hayford Road. They determined the man was crossing Hayford Road in an attempt to reach the bus station on the west side of the street.

An SUV traveling south struck him, followed by a second vehicle also traveling in the same direction. The man did not survive his injuries from the incident, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Craig Chamberlain, from the Sheriff's Office, said toxicology reports wouldn't be available for about a month. Drivers of both vehicles voluntarily submitted to blood tests at the scene. At the moment, however, there is no suspicion of intoxication regarding the first vehicle that hit the man.

The driver of the first vehicle was charged with traveling too fast for conditions, with no charges expected for the second driver.

Chamberlain said the intersection isn't one that has been a huge problem in terms of incidents.

The investigation is ongoing.
