United Church of Christ

It might seem like a day of contrasts, like ying and yang. Feb. 26 is the first Sunday in Lent but still, it's also the birthday of the Cheney United Church of Christ. So first we welcome everyone to the service of worship held in the sanctuary at 423 North Sixth St., starting at 10 a.m. Pastor Joan Sulser will reveal how the wilderness times related in Mark 1:9-15 seriously shaped Jesus and His ministry.

Children (age 3 to grade 8) may either go to their class after listening to the children's minutes or stay in church with their parents. Little ones may stay in the child care room in the Christian Education building from 9:45-11:15 a.m.

Then “Happy Birthday to Us!” after worship; feast on birthday cakes, one for each month of the year, at the Church Birthday celebration. We're friendly folks. Please join us.

Also, the Lenten series begins this Wednesday, Feb. 29, with Pastor Sulser using a Nooma video by Rob Bell, “Today: Does the past block our vision of the beauty of today?” as the focus of this week's discussion. Each one of the five videos is 11-14 minutes, allowing time for discussion that we hope will deepen and broaden our faith. Come to one, some, or all of the sessions, and consider bringing a friend.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church

All are welcome! A welcoming haven, nourishing all God's people in body, mind and spirit.

The First Sunday in Lent. Holy Eucharist at 11 a.m. Rev. Christine Soule will preach and preside. Child care is available.

This past Sunday we welcomed and rejoiced in the annual visit of Bishop James Waggoner who, in addition to preaching, led us in the Confirmation of Lyn Megow, Kathi McKinley, Kevin Falkner and JW Dalton. Our celebration continued with a potluck brunch.

Lenten Study, beginning February 29, will focus on “The Soul of Christianity,” by Huston Smith, well known author of “The World's Religions,” former teacher at Washington University, MIT, Syracuse University and University of California, Berkeley. We will gather each Wednesday at 6 p.m. for soup and bread followed by discussion and contemplation. All are welcome.

Attention college students: Please join us for dinner, worship and discussion each Monday evening at 5 p.m. in the Parish Hall. We are a group of college students and young adults who take our faith journey seriously as we engage in ministry to and with each other. Wherever you are on your faith journey, you will be welcome and will find rest, renewal and nourishment for your mind, body and soul.

Narcotics Anonymous meets in the Parish Hall each Tuesday and Saturday evening at 7 p.m.

Fellowship breakfast every Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Join us for good food, fellowship and discussion. Come and bring a friend!

For your contemplation: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” John 14.27. Reflect on the meaning of peace. What is the “peace of God which passes all understanding” and how does it relate to the peace we seek in the world? Reflect on the relationship between justice and peace.

St. Paul's is located at 625 C St. on the edge of EWU campus.
