Letters to the Editor

Thanks to Cheney Light Department for safe return of cat

Our family would like to thank three of Cheney's finest from the Cheney Light Department: Travis Billigmeier, Bill Widman and Will Birrenckott.

Last week our family cat “Jack” spent a very cold and wet night for some unknown reason on the top of a 25-foot high power pole behind our home on Seventh Street. When it became obvious that “normal” methods to encourage Jack to back his way down the pole failed we called for professional help. Despite great risk and the probability of a “shocking” ending to this story, after an hour safely preparing Jack's recovery he was returned to us safe and sound, albeit very cold, wet and hungry.

Maybe he has learned his lesson, but it's more likely that he just used two or three of his nine lives. Again, we would like to give the men from the city of Cheney Light Department a big thank you from the Baccarella family, Alison, Amy, Jewel and Pete, for safely returning our Jack.

Political fundraising phone calls have real people on the line

This is a mite soon after my last “letter,” but too good not to share. Most people ignore the politicians phoning for money and don't listen to them. I encountered a friendly one who asked about the weather where I live. She volunteered she was calling from Minnesota. I said, “You're weather is much colder than mine.” She answered, “Yes, at least you can smell the ocean.”

Cheney pool refurbishment can help save community site

Cheney's outdoor pool had to be closed much of the summer last year due to multiple closings for leak repairs. Now Cheney has a possibility of help from the state in the form of a program called “Jobs Now.” In January, the “Cheney Outdoor Pool Refurbishment” was submitted as a project to be considered as a part of this effort. If you would like to email our elected officials to let them know why the Cheney Outdoor Pool is an ideal project to include in this potential funding package, please email Paul Simmons, Cheney Park & Rec director, at [email protected] and ask him to send you the email addresses of our legislators, along with talking points you might include in your communications with the legislators. If you have questions about this, call Paul at 498-9295.
