Leonardo Cantu Sr. (71) passed away Aug. 19, 2011 at his home in Cheney. He was born July 16, 1940 in McAllen, Texas to Leopoldo and Esther Cantu.
Born and raised in McAllen, Leonardo entered the United States Army in 1961. He proudly served his country for 13 years during Vietnam and received the Bronze Star. He moved to Cheney in 2000 to be closer to his family.
Leonardo leaves behind his sons; Leopoldo, Leonardo Jr. and Jose. His daughters; Katharina, Maria, and Jessica, daughters in-law; Caryn and Kimberlee, son in-law; Baldemar and 12 grandchildren.
Leonardo will always be remembered for his kindness, always encouraging advice and willingness to help others, but mostly for his ability to make people laugh. He succumbed to lung and pancreatic cancer after a courageous battle, surrounded by his loved ones. Having touched the lives of so many, he will be greatly missed.
A rosary was held Monday, Aug 29 at 7 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cheney with the funeral mass on Tuesday. The inurnment will be at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery.
