Laura Louise Berggren

Laura Louise (Schmitt) Berggren passed away July 17, 2011, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Beaverton, Oregon, and was laid to rest at Valley Memorial Park in Hillsboro, Ore.

Laura was born on Jan. 25, 1939, to Otto and Agnes Schmitt on the farm on the Lance Hill Road south of Cheney. She graduated from Cheney High School in 1957 and married Harold Berggren in October of 1972. For years, she and Harold sponsored many students from Russia. Laura was a homemaker and an artist; she especially enjoyed keeping in touch with her high school classmates. She belonged to the Portland Art Museum, the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #104 in Aloha, Ore. and the Cheney Historical Museum.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by two sisters, Arlene (Jim) Mowatt of Cheney and Mary Heffner of Poulsbo, WAash.; three brothers, Ron (Carol) Schmitt of Cheney, Ray (Joan) Schmitt of Sprague, and Robert (Barb) Danforth of Walla Walla, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her special “students,” Viktoria Leeper, Sadna Samranayake and Natalia Yegorova.
