Like their Double A counterparts Cheney's Single A American Legion baseball team has opened their 2011 schedule with a 2-1 record.

The Summer Hawks opened play last Wednesday, June 8 with a 3-0 win over the visiting Coeur d'Alene Jacks. Saturday they split a doubleheader at Central Valley, losing the opener 12-3 but taking the nightcap 12-4.

Tyler Smith got the win on the mound Wednesday against the Jacks, contributing offensively along with Jacob Christianson and Josh Arthur. All three had RBIs.

“We did a good job of executing with guys in scoring position,” first-year Summer Hawks A manager Drew Ableman said.

Smith also got the win in game two at Central Valley, with Sawyer Sims taking the loss in game one. Offensively, Ableman said Tristan Flippo had the big afternoon for the Summer Hawks. Flippo had six hits over both games, including a five-hit, 3 RBI performance in game two.

Cheney steps out of league play this weekend for the annual Cheney Tournament, June 16-19. The Summer Hawks take on the Jacks Thursday and Mt. Spokane Friday, both games at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday Cheney wraps up tournament play against Gonzaga Prep at 6 p.m. All games are at the Ballpark in Cheney, “The BIC,” also known as the high school field. The winner of the five-team tournament will be determined by best overall record.

Cheney resumes its league schedule on Monday, June 21 at West Valley.
