Barbara Renee Barton Stettler, 70, passed away at her home in Cheney from complications of lung cancer on June 1, 2011.
Born December 29, 1940 in Ogden, Utah where she lived until she was 34-years-old. Barbara was one of the first women to graduate with a BS in physics from Weber State College in 1974. The family moved to Prosser, Wash. in 1974 where she worked as a physicist at Westinghouse Hanford for five years. In 1981, the family moved to Cheney where Barbara worked at Eastern Washington University as an instructional tech in the physics department until she retired in 1998. The years spent at EWU were some of her happiest.
Barbara enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, crochet, drawing, and pottery. She was an avid reader and enjoyed long discussions with family and friends at the kitchen table. She spent the past 10 years researching family genealogy and has documented her ancestry. Her interest in genealogy stemmed from her love of her grandparents, Agnes Dollar (Morrow) Johnston and David S. Johnston. Doing internet research she discovered family members in Scotland and shared email with many friends who provided her much joy over the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett Lorenzo Barton and Barbara Irene (Johnston) Barton, her brother Larry David Barton, and her great granddaughter Taylor Ashlyn Peterson. Barbara is survived by her husband, Dale John Stettler. They married on March 15, 1957. Together they had four children: Dale Dean (Peggy L.) Stettler, Timothy Todd Stettler, Bambie Lynn Stettler and Jennifer Jill Stettler. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Brandy Brook (Gavin Craig) Peterson, Ashley Ann Stettler; her great grandson, Tanner Craig Peterson; her brother, Robert Emmett (Elaine) Barton; and her sister-in-law, Carol C. Barton.
A graveside service will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 at Spokane Memorial Gardens, 5909 S. Cheney-Spokane Road, Spokane, Wash. Cheney Funeral Chapel, Cheney. Online guest book at cheneyfuneral.com.
