The cause of a Cheney home fire is under investigation.
The fire, reported at 2:30 a.m. Monday from the 700 block of West Fifth Street, likely began in or near the fireplace on the main floor of the home, Cheney battalion chief Gary Hartford said.
“The fireplace was being used at the time,” he said. “The fire was still going when they went to bed.”
The resident who reported the fire said they awoke to the smell of smoke at 2:15 a.m. and called 911. The building's four residents and several pets escaped from the fire unharmed. Five trucks and 14 crew members from the Cheney Fire Department and Fire District #3 responded to the blaze, and the fire was declared extinguished after two hours.
“Fire District No. 3 helped out,” Hartford said. “They had two vehicles respond with personnel. We appreciated their participation and everybody worked well to get this taken care of in a timely manner.”
Fire damage was contained to the living room, while smoke damage was present throughout the main floor of the house. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Hartford said it appeared to be unintentional.
