The Cheney Waves swim team sent 26 swimmers to Walla Walla, Wash. for the highly competitive January Storm swim meet Jan. 7-9 as the first meet of the year.
Two of the competing Waves swimmers came from Cheney and practice regularly at the EWU Aquatic Center.
First time competitor Matthew Norman started swimming as a recreational swimmer with the Waves in the fall. He was excited to show what he had learned and definitely did, placing 10th in the 25 yard freestyle and ninth in his 20 yard backstroke race.
Eleven-year-old Makenzie Norman showed her stuff, competing in her age group and earning a terrific sixth place finish in the 500 yard freestyle race.
Cheney Waves swim team practices Monday through Friday at the Eastern Washington University Aquatic Center from 3:30-5 p.m. Many swim levels are available from beginner (Ripples) to the Senior level. New swimmers or those interested in joining the team are invited to visit the team website at http://www.spokanewaves.org or call coach Kevin Wang at 230-7006.
