Holiday DUI patrols see arrests drop

Results from the recent “drive Hammered, Get Nailed” enforcement campaign showed a 68 percent reduction in arrests in Spokane County.

The campaign consisted of emphasis patrols in Spokane, Whitman and Pend Oreille counties Nov. 25, 2010 through Jan. 2, 2011. Locally, officers from Cheney, Airway Heights and Spokane County worked extra patrols stopping motorists for driving under the influence. The patrols were funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

During the campaign, 168 motorists were stopped and arrested for DUI, down from the 245 arrests made in the 2009 campaign.

During 2009, impaired drivers killed more than half of the 491 people who died on Washington's roadways. The 264 impaired driver-involved deaths last year represent a decrease of nine fatalities compared to the previous five-year average.
