The city of Airway Heights took the full force of an area snowstorm last Wednesday, Dec. 29, with more than 7 inches falling before noon and a total of just over 10 inches by the storm's end.

Despite the large accumulation streets were cleared quickly by city plows, Mayor Patrick Rushing said at Monday's City Council meeting. He thanked the department for their efforts in getting 10.5 inches cleared before it froze up.

“Our public works department put a lot of preparation into our snow removal plans to make sure that when we got hit heavy everything went really smooth,” he told councilmembers.

The National Weather Service Spokane Office reported that moderate to heavy snow hit the entire Northern Idaho and eastern Washington area last week, lasting about 36 hours. The storm produced total snow amounts of 10 to 15 inches in the Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Kellogg, Sandpoint, Deer Park and Newport areas. The highest snow accumulation was reported in Clark Fork, Idaho where a whopping 28.5 inches fell.

The office also reported last week that the total 2010 snow measurement at the Spokane International Airport was 46.3 inches, which is exactly average.

The total 2010 precipitation measurement for the year was 19.03 inches, 2.36 above average, and the highest area wind gust measured for the year was 64 miles per hour on Nov. 16.
