A Spokane County judge ruled Dec. 16 that a woman who killed her daughter in Medical Lake 11 years ago should continue to live under supervision. In 1999 Sharon Curry stabbed her eight-year-old daughter Jessica to death while sitting in the front seat of her car outside their home in the 1000 block of East Fellows Avenue. In 2000 a jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity after hearing arguments that Curry was in a drug-induced psychosis at the time of the murder. Curry was sent to Eastern State Hospital and later released to a Spokane Valley halfway house. For the past few years she has lived independently at a Spokane Valley apartment under certain release conditions, including mandatory urinalysis, no contact with minors and monthly visits from an ESH forensic therapist and a community corrections officer.
According to local news reports, Curry recently requested to have no more supervision, her defense arguing that she is a changed woman who would like to be given the chance to return to a normal life.
After hearing testimony from Curry's parole officer, Spokane County Judge Michael Price determined that current release conditions should remain in place, as there is still risk that she could have another psychotic event where she or others could be harmed.
This is the second time Curry has been denied a request to be freed from release conditions.
