It seems the flooring business isn't booming in Cheney.
After just seven months open, owner Jim Powers closed Cheney Discount Flooring. Powers bought the business from Vern Chapman, who also ran a flooring business out of the 113 F St. storefront and had been looking to sell it for some time.
“I'm not sure if Cheney can support a flooring store,” Powers said. He and his wife Marcy closed the store in November after meeting with their accountant.
“We did our books and figured out that we were not going in a good direction,” he said. “We made the difficult decision to close.”
Powers said he was doing some business while the store was open, but it wasn't enough. He said things slowed down as winter approached.
“The community in general, as far as consumers go, there was not much support,” Powers said. “It was more an attitude of, we're shopping local just as a favor but we're going to expect more.”
Powers said he wished it would have worked out, but he didn't want to lose money. He is now working for Spokane's Carpet One. The building is up for lease.
