Eastern Washington University's board of trustees will have a new chair, vice chair and student trustee for the 2010-11 academic year.
Board members recently elected Bertha Ortega as their chair, succeeding Jo Ann Kauffman, who served in that role the past two years. Ortega is a founding member of Heritage University in Toppenish, Wash., and has served on EWU's board since 2002. She will serve as board chair through September 2011.
“Higher education is the foundation for our future success, and I am thrilled to serve as chair of the board and I look forward to the partnership of all educators to build a better future for our students,” Ortega said in a press release.
The trustees also voted to have Neil McReynolds serve as vice chair through the same period. McReynolds, a retired corporate executive and dedicated advocate for higher education, has served on the EWU board since 2000. He currently teaches in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Washington and serves as a board governance consultant.
The student trustee for the year will be Amanda Zeller, who was appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire. Zeller, a senior from Naches, Wash., is pursuing a bachelor of arts in government and pre-law, with a minor in African American studies. She also plans to attend graduate school at Eastern. During her time at EWU, Zeller has been involved with Mock Trial, ASEWU and Residential Life. She is the 12th student appointed to the board and will serve through June 2011.
The trustees work with the university president to set the strategic direction of EWU, serve as advocates for the university and help ensure that Eastern is academically and financially accountable and successful.
