Medical Lake resident Ken Guidry is leading the organization of a citizen's group that will work to oppose locating a halfway house for sex offenders in the city. “A measured, articulate response is going to be more effective than an emotional response,” Guidry said.
The Cheney Planning Commission is still agonizing over making a decision on whether to allow manufactured homes in single-family residential areas. The question has moved past simply whether they will be allowed to making sure such structures will not bring down existing property values.
Just when Medical Lake public works director Doug Ross thought he was done with construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, a new roadblock in the form of an archaeological study will keep a trail around the plant from being completed at the present time.

A program that provides free food to needy families in the Cheney area has been brought back to life and in fact will continue distributing surplus commodities without missing a beat. The effort to distribute USDA surplus food hit a snag when coordinator Jean Johnson, a volunteer, resigned, and their location at the Wren Pierson Building was turned into a daycare.
The campaign to convince local voters to support an upcoming $16.4 million bond issue for improvements to Cheney schools will get a late information blitz in the final 10 days of the campaign. The push will include yard signs, writing letters to the editor of area newspapers, as well as trying to find space on business owners' reader boards.
EWU's Homecoming flooded downtown Cheney with a variety of events including Friday night bed races on First Street along with a parade on Saturday.

Final preparations are being made for the American Institute of Architects urban design team visit to Cheney this week. The team will be in town for two days and be involved in what are called “intense brainstorming sessions,” focusing on development of Cheney's railroad theme.
“100 Washington Square” will be the name of the 25-unit apartment complex which is being planned by Gary Geschke. The project is specifically designed to meet the needs of both elderly and handicapped and offer Section 8 rent subsidy for low-income residents. The project would be located at the intersection of Washington Street and Salnave Road.
Cheney High School's volleyball team rallied after falling in their first game 11-15 to hand visiting Pullman its first loss of the season 2-1 after the Black Hawks beat the Greyhounds15-2 and 15-11. The serving of Stacy Barrom and Michele Rivard provided key points.
Cheney's football team lost for the second straight week, dropped a 28-0 decision to Clarkston and is preparing to host Medical Lake, an 8-6 loser to East Valley, in the annual Homecoming game.
