The Cheney High School marching band placed second in their division at the Cavalcade of Bands in Pasco Oct. 2.

It was their first competition in the AAA division, competing with larger schools. Director Mike Suhling said he was happy with the results, which included a “Best General Effect” award for the entire band, percussion and color guard ensemble.

“This is the highest Cheney has ever placed,” Suhling said, adding that they scored at least 10 more points than at last year's Cavalcade.

Suhling said the marching band's 95 members have been working on their routine, titled “Fabric In Time,” since their two-week camp in late August. He estimated the band spent 120 hours at the camp, plus their thrice-weekly after school practices and football game performances.

“They've put a lot of work in,” he said. “This program has caught its stride at this point.”

Students have the day off school this Friday, but Suhling said the band will be on the field, reworking their routine in preparation for the “Sounds of Thunder” Pacific Northwest High School Marching Band Show at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane, which takes place on Saturday. Cheney will take the field at 1 p.m.
