Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge holds annual fall work party Oct. 16

Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge and the Spokane Audubon Society will host a community work party as part of National Wildlife Refuge Week Saturday, Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. This is part of an ongoing community effort to restore native riparian habitat to benefit all wildlife.

The refuge has hundreds of native saplings to plant and fencing to build at the project site to protect the trees from deer, elk and moose browsing. Everyone is welcome with groups asked to call in advance to register to assist the refuge in their planning process.

The refuge will host a potluck lunch afterwards, with attendees invited to bring their favorite dish. Work party participants should wear a long-sleeve shirt, work pants, sturdy boots or shoes and gloves, and if possible bring shovels and pliers.

Work party participants will meet at the refuge headquarters. To get to the headquarters drive five miles south on Cheney-Plaza Road, turn left at Smith Road and drive two miles.

For more information or to register call Sandy Rancourt at 235-4723.
