A group of Medical Lake organizations and residents are planning what they hope will become an annual community service day with a cleanup of St. Anne's Cemetery on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m.
Bishop Scott Zinn with Medical Lake's Church of Latter-Day Saints is one of the primary organizers of the service day, which will focus on a different project each year. He said the cemetery, which is northwest of downtown on South Brooks Road, was identified as needing some serious attention.
“We wanted to clean it up to make a pleasant experience for those there visiting loved ones,” he said.
So far Zinn said about 40 people have signed up to complete a variety of projects around the five acre property such as trimming weeds, mowing grass and cleaning and repairing headstones. A light lunch, drinks and restroom facilities will be provided on site and special arrangements are being made to accommodate parking for larger groups of people.
Besides Zinn's church a number of other groups have signed up, including Boy Scout troops 319 and 307, Medical Lake Community Church and Saint Anne's Catholic Church.
Medical Lake resident and City Councilman John Paikuli, who is also helping organize the event, said he hopes to see a few more groups and individuals step up as word spreads.
“We thought it important that we find a day we can all render service working shoulder to shoulder with our fellow community members on larger projects that this township might need,” he wrote in a recent e-mail.
Zinn said Sept. 11 was chosen for the event because it offers the opportunity to recognize a sometimes forgotten aspect of the nine-year-old catastrophe. “We all remember that tragic day but when we do we also have to remember the way people worked together to help one another. We wanted to commemorate that,” he said.
