Ruth Wortman

Ruth Wortman died July 18. She was born in Omaha, Neb. on March 29, 1915, the youngest of six children.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Ray Wortman.  She is survived by her daughter, Judy Zimmerman, son-in-law, Niel; grandson Kurt Zimmerman, his wife Kelly, great-granddaughter Katie and a great-grandchild expected soon in Eugene Or.; granddaughter Joelle Gere, her husband Richard and great-granddaughter's Jade and Asia of Cheney.

Ruth was a hard worker and began her 60-year career at age 16 as an elevator operator in the Woodman of the World Building in Omaha.  The couple moved to California in the late 1930s. Ruth worked as a lead girl at McDonald-Douglas during the war.  She managed a Salvation Army Store in Hemet, Calif. for several years before moving to Cheney in 2000 to be near family

She loved her family, friends, playing games and was an avid pinochle player.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  

A celebration of Ruth's life will be held for family at a later date in Ione, Wash., where a tree will be planted to honor her memory.  In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to Hospice of Spokane.
