The Twisted Sisters knitting group has been awarded the 2010 Community Service Award by Aging Services of Washington.
Twisted Sisters, a group based at Cheney Care Center, donated blankets, hats and mittens to Project Warmup last October after CCC employees Diane Smart and Joanna Morris started the group last June. Project Warmup, which supplies blankets and warm clothes to the homeless and needy, nominated the group for the award. Only one is given out per year to groups from not-for-profit nursing homes.
“We were very surprised because we're a very small facility compared to some of them, a lot of them in Seattle,” Morris said. “We have no money and this is all done with donations.”
The group made 17 blankets for an October “blanket party,”at which the group turned over their donations to Project Warmup. Since then, they've made a lot more as the group has grown to around 30 members, including CCC staff, family members and residents.
“People who do this love it, and it's a good reason to do it,” Morris said.
The Twisted Sisters meet one Saturday a month at the Sessions Village community room for a potluck lunch and knitting. Since the award, Morris said other nursing homes have approached them for help starting similar groups.
