This weekend could be independence day for animals

Spokane Humane Society hopes people will step forward to adopt 170 cats and kittens by July 3

Between now and July 3, the Spokane Humane Society has set a goal to adopt 170 of the shelter's cats and kittens into loving permanent homes. Currently the shelter has almost 200 animals on hand, so prospective owners will have a large seleciton of colors, personalities and sizes to chose from.

“With the recent large number of unwanted animals being surrendered to the Spokane Humane Society, we need the community's help to provide homes for these amazing Spokalicious animals…the shelter is full,” Spokane Human Society executive director Dave Richardson said. “In order to help things along, we will be waiving adoption fees on cats and kittens and select dogs too. We need individuals and families in the market for a new furry-faced family member to opt to adopt.”

All of these cats, kittens and select dogs available for adoption are current on their shots and are spayed or neutered and micro-chipped. People wishing to help underwrite the cost of care can sponsor an animal online at http://www.spokanehumanesociety.org or in person.

With the kids out of school, Humane Society officials say now is the perfect time to get a new pet. Having someone home to help a new family pet learn the house rules will help them adjust to their new surroundings. It is also a great time to enroll new pets in an obedience training program.

Spokane Humane Society is a private, non-profit 501c3 organization, an independent local organization that relies on the generosity of people for time, talent and financial support. The Spokane Humane Society will be closed on Sunday, July 4.
