Jarrod Swanson had the most success of Medical Lake track athletes at last weekend's state championships in Tacoma as the senior scored the highest finish of the small contingent of Cardinals who competed.
The senior emerged from the preliminaries to finish seventh in the triple jump with a 43 foot, 2 inch jump. Will Hallberg of South Whidbey won with a 46-7 1/2. Swanson's 18-10 3/4 was 14th in the long jump behind the 22-10 of Anacortes' Thomas Kassa. In the 200 meters Swanson was unable to emerge from the preliminaries with a time of 25.01 seconds.
“Jarrod jumped a seven-inch personal record in the triple jump for a 43-2, which was good for seventh place,” coach Phil Averill said. “He was just six inches out of fourth place in a tight event.”
That came despite weather conditions that were horrible, Averill said. “All of our kids had to battle some terrible elements that made competing difficult--gusty wind, torrential rain, and cold temperatures.”
Junior Matt Friddle's 5-8 leap in the high jump was two inches shy of his PR, good for eighth behind familiar foe DeAngelo Jones of Cheney at 6-4. “Matt jumped a 5 foot, 8 inch while running into the wind and rain,” Averill said. Had Friddle jumped his district marks he would have been tied for second, according to Averill.
A throw of 34-10 1/2 earned Emily Pake 10th in the shot put behind the 43-10 1/2 first place effort from Anna LaBeaume out of Sequim. Pake was 15th in the discus with a throw of 90-10. Othello's Tiffany Martinez threw the discus 128-15 to win the event while Pake's 90-10 was 15th.
