Cheney girls golfer Marye Fuqua fired a two-round score of 192 to finish fourth overall at District 7 competition last Monday, May 17, at Meadow Wood Golf Course in Liberty Lake, in the process qualifying her for this week's 2A state competition at Apple Tree Golf Resort in Yakima..
Fuqua finished strong with a 93 at districts after opening with a 99, placing the junior 10th heading into the final round. Blackhawks junior Marina Wilbur also finished strong with a second-round 103 after opening with a 113, but ended up 14th overall with a 216. The top 12 golfers advance from district competition to state.
Deer Park senior Kelsey Dutton shot identical rounds of 79 to capture the District 7 title, finishing seven shots ahead of Pullman junior Paige Whidbee. Colville took team honors with Cheney placing fifth ahead of West Valley and Medical Lake.
Cheney qualified just one member of its boys' team for districts. Freshman Tyler Maurer shot rounds of 87 and 90 for a score of 177, finishing 18th out of 24 golfers. Clarkston sophomore Tyler Carlson captured the district title with rounds of 67 and 69, finishing with an overall 136, eight strokes ahead of Colville senior Casey Cox.
At Apple Tree, Fuqua shot a first-round 99, good for a four-way tie for 41st, but one stroke short of the second day cut.
